Cockshutt CE Primary School & Nursery

Autumn 2025

In maths we have been looking closely at tens frames and using them to make number bonds to 10. We noticed the pattern in the change of numbers when investigating the bonds to ten and then used our knowledge when inputting this information into part-whole models to look at the addition facts relating to the bonds to ten.

We investigated Crumble the dogs teeth! After some close examination we decided she would be a carnivore because of the sharpness of the teeth. After this we then investigated which other animals would be carnivores, herbivores or omnivores.

In geography we have been exploring our local village so we decided to take a stroll to find some local landmarks including the church, the school, the pub, the millenium hall and of course the most loved landmark of all.... the park!

In sceince we learnt all about amphibians. We then went on a hunt in forest school and founds lots of newts! We learnt they like to live on land and water, lay eggs and have four or zero legs. We then came back to class to create factfiles and make models of all of the amphibians we had learnt about.

We explored firework night by making forework pictures and writing our own poems. We looked carefully at the colours of fireworks and the sounds we might hear!

We have been looking at creating organic shapes in art. It was great fun to create shapes from a simple starting line and then comparing to se how our shapes differed from each other.

This week we have been exploring poems from the book 'Commotion in the Ocean'. We carefully thought about what a commotion is and we investigated rhyme. Take a look at our poems and alongside this we made our own coral reefs and pracitced out cutting skills by creating some cheeky lobseters!

This week in art we made art to music. We learnt that Paul Klee loved playing the violin and warmed up by making marks to music before painting. We listened to lots of different styles of music to make marks, building upon different types of marks and different pressures of mark.

The reception children have been busy brushing thier teeth every day after lunch. Alongside this they have been helping the tooth monster to brush his teeth too! We have kindly been given lots of new resources from the Brilliant Brushes scheme to allow us to look at dental hygiene closely through puppets, books and games.

In our story Poo in the Zoo the Iguana made a glowing poo by eating all of the fireflies! We made some of our own glowing poo and then went about thinking and writing descriptive words to explain how it felt! It was super gooey!

We have been getting very excited by our learning lately and one little superstar in class decided to extend his own learning by junk modelling. We have been learning about reptiles in science and in his own time he made pedro the turtle! We chatted about his key features such as having cold blood, needing a lamp or sunshine, living on land and in water and having hard scaly skin/shell. It was lovely to see previous learning linking through creativity and play!

We have been exploring line in our most recent art sessions. We looked at different varieties of lines we could create such as wavy, zigzag, straight, dashed and then looked at how they changed when we applied more pressure to the material we were using. We made some superb peices of artwork.

This week we have been looking at our class book: Poo in the Zoo. In the story it mentions all of the different types of animal poo the zookeepr has to collect. We made our own versions and had to write labels to show which animal it came from. We sounded out and treid really hard to form the letters the correct way!

We have been working hard with our letter sounds this week and have learnt s,a,t and p. We are great at finding items that begin with these sounds and have been forming the letters in lots of different ways too!

This week we have been having a series of wonderul workshops about native animals in the UK with Lucy from Chester Zoo. Our favourite activty was looking at predators and prey today.

We had a lovely day at the zoo! We saw so many wonderful animals, found out lots of facts and did a wonderful workshop about native trees at the zoo.

We have began our new theme of animals this week, in particular we are looking at animals we may find int he zoo for our trip this half term. We have made our own Dear Zoo book pages, practicing our writing and drawing skills in the same style as the book. We have painted our favourtie zoo animals and we have ben using the small world area to create our very own zoos! Tigers are very popular amongst the whole class. Lets hop we see one when we visit the zoo!

Lots of us have been developing our cutting skills this week. Creativity was everywhere when this little boy found a lego box! He wanted to make a car watch so he cut out the car carefully, made holes with the hole punch and threaded string to make the strap.

We have been getting to know each other this week and initiating play ideas. We took inspiration from a little boys trip to Shell Island in the holidays. He decided to recreate what he had experienced and his friends were so eager to join in. They all rolled the sand smooth, added shells, made singposts, character cards for family members that attended the trip and that all lead into construction play where boats were designed and tested to see if they floated!
