Year One Homework πŸ“’

Reading

School reading books will be sent and we will change them regularly. Your child needs to come to school with their book bag containing their books and reading records into school every day. Please read with your child every day and record this in your reading record. In your reading record entry, please include the name of the book, how many pages read and anything your child did well or needed help with. This enables us to support them with any targets in school. Similarly, we will share reading target for you to work on at home. We really want reading to be enjoyable for both you and your child. We have found for this to be most successful, it is best to read little and often. I recommend that you spend 10-15 minutes reading with your child each day. A fun way to encourage shared reading is to alternate reading a page to your child and your child reading a page to you. Your child will also bring home a library book every week. This is a book for you to read to your child. Reading to your child supports their development of vocabulary, understanding of the world around them and their comprehension skills.

We will also introduce weekly homework books to the year one children. This will have a maths, phonics or english focus and will be given out once a week on a Wednesday and will be due in the following Wednesday.

Reception Homework πŸ“š

Reading

Your child will bring home a book from our school reading scheme and a story book from our class library. You should spend around 10-15 minutes reading at home with your child each day. Try to make this a fun, enjoyable experience to foster a love for reading early on. Initially, your child will bring home a picture book. This is for them to develop their understanding of the structure of stories and improve their vocabulary alongside you at home. It is a great opportunity for you to “scaffold” the use of story language (which supports their comprehension and writing skills), such as “once upon a time”, “suddenly”, “next”. Reception children will begin to receive reading books with words as their knowledge of phonics and blending develops.

Your child needs to come to school with their book bag containing their books and reading records into school every day.
